How to clean up an interview recorded on your phone

To clean up an interview you recorded on your phone, import the recording or video into Denoise, keep the default AI · Auto engine and tap Denoise: an AI model on your phone turns down café chatter, traffic, air conditioning and hum while keeping both voices natural, and sets the overall loudness to a standard level. The steps are the same for a podcast recorded on a phone, and nothing is uploaded.

Clean up an interview in three steps

  1. Import the interview

Tap + › Import from Files, or Import from Gallery for a video. You can also share it to Denoise from Voice Memos or your recorder app.

  2. Tap Denoise

Keep AI · Auto and tap Denoise. An hour-long interview takes several minutes on a recent phone; there is no length limit.

  3. Check both voices, then save

Compare Original and Cleaned where each person speaks, then tap Share Cleaned or Save to Files…. If the quieter voice sounds thin, lower Denoise strength a little and tap Re-denoise.

A public-domain LibriVox reading under busy, café-like background noise (CC0 noise via the DeepFilterNet project), not a real interview. The after is the unedited output of DeepFilterNet, the model family Denoise runs on your phone.

Good to know

  • Denoise removes noise, not people: the next table's conversation is turned down, but a voice as close to the phone as your guest's can stay.
  • Denoise sets the loudness of the whole recording, not of each speaker. A guest who sat far from the phone stays quieter than you; next time, put the phone between you, or record each person separately.
  • Echo in a bare room is reduced less than steady noise such as air conditioning.
  • Need a transcript? Keep the default Denoise strength rather than the maximum: in our test, audio cleaned at full strength cost a speech recognizer more words than a lighter clean (Clean audio before transcribing).

Frequently asked questions

Can I clean a video interview?

Yes. Import the video: Denoise cleans its sound and saves a new copy of the video with the cleaned audio, and your original is kept (Remove background noise from a video).

Can I record the interview in Denoise?

Yes. Tap + and choose Recorder: Denoise removes the noise while you record on phones fast enough to keep up, or as soon as you stop (Record without background noise).

Does it work for a podcast recorded on a phone?

Yes, the steps are the same. Before you publish, listen to the cleaned version with headphones: on a very noisy recording, the quietest syllables can come out softer.

Is it free?

Importing, cleaning and listening are free, with no account. Saving or sharing the result is paid: 3 exports cost $1.99, and Denoise Pro $2.99 a month or $14.99 once ($11.99 on Google Play). These are US prices from October 2026; the store shows yours before you pay.

Is my interview uploaded?

No. The AI model runs on your phone, so it works offline and the recording never leaves it, which matters for a confidential interview.
