How to clean up a voice memo

To clean up a voice memo, share it from your recorder app to Denoise, tap Denoise and save the cleaned copy: an AI model on your phone removes background noise such as traffic, fans, wind and chatter while keeping the voice natural. Your original recording stays as it was, and nothing is uploaded.

Clean up a memo in three steps

  1. Send the memo to Denoise

On iPhone, open Voice Memos, tap the recording, tap •••, then Share, and choose Denoise. On Android, share it from your recorder app, or tap + › Import from Files in Denoise.

  2. Tap Denoise

Keep the default engine, AI · Auto, and tap Denoise. Lower the Denoise strength if you want to keep a little of the room sound.

  3. Listen and save

Switch between Original and Cleaned, then tap Share Cleaned to send the memo to any app, or Save to Files… to keep it on your phone.

Good to know

  • Apple's Voice Memos has an Enhance Recording option that reduces background noise and echo, and newer iPhones add Studio Sound for Spatial Audio recordings. For light noise that may be all you need; Denoise is for heavier noise, for memos from other apps, and for a cleaned file you can send anywhere.
  • Denoise brings out the speech that is under the noise. It does not invent words that were never recorded, so a voice that is completely buried gets clearer but won't sound like a studio recording.

Frequently asked questions

Will it change my original memo?

No. Denoise works on a copy; the original stays in your recorder app.

How long can the memo be?

There is no length limit. A one-minute memo takes about 5 to 10 seconds on a recent phone; an hour-long one takes several minutes.

Which formats work?

Voice Memos recordings, M4A, MP3, WAV and most other common audio formats, plus the audio inside MP4 and MOV videos. Exports are M4A by default, with MP3 and WAV as options.

Is it free?

Importing, cleaning and listening are free, with no account. Saving or sharing the result needs Denoise Pro: $2.99 a month or $14.99 once (US prices, October 2026; the store shows yours before you pay).
